Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about ‘the art of targeting’.

Since MY target market is online business owners, in literally hundreds of markets — it becomes tricky when it comes to developing a platform to serve and cater to all of them.

To define ones target market, we had to consider a whole bunch of factors…

Target markets are groups of people separated by distinguishable and noticeable aspects.

Target markets can be separated into:

  1. Geographic segmentations (their location)
  2. Demographic/socio-economic segmentation (gender, age, income occupation, education, household size, and stage in the family life cycle)
  3. Psychographics segmentation (similar attitudes, values, and lifestyles)
  4. Behavioral segmentation (occasions, degree of loyalty)
  5. Product-related segmentation (relationship to a product)

What would make your primary target market?

What’s involved in this process? How would you know that certain demographics, age group, household income, gender, and interest group will respond to your offer?

For Example:

If you are selling Mortgage Refinancing in New York — you would want to reach male or female home owners, who have expressed interest in ‘Home Mortgage’ category, aged between 40 to 65, with annual household income of $60,000 to $100,000, who is full-time employed, and lives in New York.

If you are selling a Home Based Business Opportunity in the USA — you would want to reach male or female, living in the US, who have recently been un-employed, and have expressed an interest in starting a home based business.

If you want to boost your response way past what you’ll make doing that, you actually have to make your offer to the right and hungry crowd.
