Taming the “Time Monster” by Focusing On Only 3 Things

Taming the “Time Monster” by Focusing On Only 3 Things

Time Saving TipsNo one on his deathbed says: “I Wish I’d spent more time at the office”. Not even a true entrepreneur.

This telling quote comes from one Dan Kennedy’s best selling books, and it’s right on target.

Yes, you might love your small business lifestyle. Yes, you might find it interesting to learn new things, but at the end of the day you probably chose internet marketing because you want to be in charge of your life.

Too often we tend to end up in “slavery” to ever increasing demands on our time instead. There are so many different elements of internet marketing we feel we should master.

Do you ever wake up in the morning feeling the gap is widening between what you should be doing, and what you actually have the time and energy to accomplish?

Are you really willing and motivated to spend most of your time desperately trying to stay on top of Twitter, Facebook, Digg, MySpace, StumbleUpon, Technorati, podcasting, video marketing, viral marketing, ppc, article marketing and more?

Remember, by 8 o’clock tomorrow morning your inbox will have a dozen more things you’re supposed to master.

If you feel discouraged, or suffering from so called “information overload”, you are not alone.

You need to know that most of what’s bombarding your inbox is not even worthy of your attention.

Let’s listen to some advice from Perry Marshall for a second. Perry has coached a lot of internet marketers over the last few years, and he has noticed an alarming pattern, repeating itself over and over.

His observation is exactly what I have found to be true as well.

Here’s what Perry wrote in one of his newsletters:

“The more people I coach, the more convinced I am that the Number One Enemy to your success is constant, relentless, never-ending Distractions. All they do is enslave you.

The secret to conquering this discouragement and getting real traction is knowing what to eliminate, and eliminating it swiftly and without remorse. Success is a process of elimination.”

I can sense thousands of nodding heads out there.

Isn’t this exactly the case? Isn’t this what’s going on in most of our lives, increasing our stress levels and causing discouragement.

I can relate to this like you wouldn’t believe!

Let’s take a closer look at this dilemma, and how we can solve it.

In my opinion there are only 3 things you really need to focus on, while building your internet business.

1) Traffic! They’ve got to find your site.

This one is obvious. For you to make money and close sales, you’ve got to have traffic.

Here’s the great news though: You do not have to master every traffic strategy under the sun, to get all the traffic you need.

Mike Long gets all the traffic he needs from writing articles. He doesn’t really need PPC to make a living.

Perry Marshall gets all the traffic he needs from pay per click. He’s not really dependant on generating traffic from articles.

Dave Kaminski gets most of his traffic from creating videos and adding them to his sites. He doesn’t really need PPC.

See where I’m headed?

We tend to get discouraged, because there are so many traffic tactics out there that we feel we ought to learn how to apply.

Forget it! You don’t have to master everything.

Quite on the contrary: If you try to master every traffic generating technique out there, you will probably never amount to anything as an internet marketer:

“Jack of all trades. Master of none.” How true…

Let me add one important thing, before moving on, though:

I’m not saying that the marketers I just mentioned are only using one traffic generating technique for all their traffic. They are smart enough to expand to more than one traffic generating method, but never until they master a single one.

To diversify traffic generation is smart, in case one of the traffic sources should dry up, but you should never get discouraged by the fact that there are lots of ways of getting visitors to your site.

The following is a great example:

Social media has been a very hot topic for a while, but remember: There are thousands upon thousands of people out there experiencing massive traffic without ever bothering about the whole Social Media craze.

I’m not saying Social Media doesn’t work. I’m just saying: You don’t need it, as long as you’ve got a traffic generation method that works.

2) The money is in the list, so start building it!

One major mistake that a majority of business owners make online, is that they never get started building their own email list.

Studies have shown that if often takes 7 sales messages to get a person to buy.

If you create an opt in page, and first send your traffic there, you increase your chances of success immensely.

We don’t even have to be good at math to understand that the higher the number of emails on our list, the more money we will make.

At least as long as we understand that our list should not be used to pitch products all the time.

Let the emails you send to your list consist of good, valuable content, and your readers will reward you by buying the products or services you recommend down the road.

3) Send offers to your list.

This goes without saying, but as long as you drive traffic to your site, and collect emails/leads, you will make money when you send offers to that list of yours.

It’s been proven, without a doubt, that a recommendation from a person you trust and like, very often leads to a resulting transaction.

Just make sure you don’t abuse that trust. If you recommend a lousy product you will lose in the long run.

Honesty is needed in business more than ever before. What goes around comes around.

Do you feel like a burden has been removed from your shoulders?

Good! That’s the way you should feel by now.

All you need is traffic, building a list and sending offers to that list.

Best of luck.

    Great article Charles.

I wrote the article “Followup or Die” back in 1999 (now in version 18 I think) that emphasizes the importance of following up with your prospects multiple times to gain their trust and therefore, make more sales. 80% of all sales are made from the 5th through the 12th contact.

One of the more recent developments is to add different ways to followup. You might start with email, then send a postcard, then maybe make a video or leave them an automated voicemail. There are tons of ways to get messages to folks. People respond differently to different methods of communication.

Example: I prefer talking to prospects on the phone. My daughter would rather text all day long! Some folks hate to talk!

Again, thanks for a great article and video
