Having a successful affiliate marketing business takes far more than simply putting up a website. You must have a plan to drive traffic to it.Those who are new to the Internet marketing game will quickly find that the cold reality of affiliate marketing means that driving traffic to the site must become the number one priority. Frankly, if you don’t get people—and lots of them—to your website you’re not going to make enough to pay for the electricity it takes to start up your computer.
Here’s a reality check. Go to Google and type in the product you are promoting on your website, then try to find your site.

If you get past page three on Google, that’s a big red flag and a major indication that no one will find your site that way. Studies have shown that most people find what they are looking for on the first two pages—and if they don’t, they Google another keyword to see if that works better. It’s called Search Engine Optimization or SEO, and if you don’t have a good one, your website will be lost.
The good news is there are ways to drive traffic to your site that will work two ways: marketing your product or website and improving your SEO.
There are a few ways to do this:
Write articles.
This can be one of the best ways to market your site and yourself. If you present yourself as an expert in the field, people will visit your site. Be certain, however, that what you write is worth reading.
A poorly written article with grammatical and spelling errors can backfire. If you cannot write well, hire someone who can. Don’t write one article and think your work is done. Make a plan to write one or more articles a week and submit them to an article site. Make a list of topics and stick to it. Every time you write an article and include your website address, it increases your SEO and at the same time directs people to your site.
Join Social Networking Sites.
Join every single social networking site available and try to remain active. FaceBook and Twitter are the most popular now, and both have special areas for networking with other Internet marketers. Now you have a captive audience for your site. Friend lots of people and many will friend you back.
You must work at it. Simply opening a FaceBook account won’t do anything to market your site. You must be active, friend people, create a unique page. Carve out some time every day to update your accounts.
Start a blog and keep it current.
So many newbies get excited about their new business and they throw up a blog and start writing. A week later, if they don’t see immediate results, they stop. Keep blogging. Visit other blogs and leave comments on articles you read. Don’t be blatant about promoting your website, but include the URL when it’s appropriate.
The bottom line is being a successful affiliate marketer takes hard work done over time. Very few businesses are successful the first month. It takes work, trial and error, a willingness to try new things and a plan.

I could not agree more. It does take “hard work done over time” to become a successful affiliate, and regardless of what some self-proclaimed gurus may say, there is no such thing as an overnight success in affiliate marketing.
You haven’t mentioned the FTC’s new guidelines for endorsements and testimonials. I saw you blogged about them a few days ago though. I think affiliates that are going to be employing the above quoted methods (articles, social networks, blogs, etc.) should especially keep the new rules in mind, and disclose their monetary connections with the advertisers.
Yes i found it was buggy as well, the pages here load really slowly. I suppose it happens sometimes with servers
