Several years ago, a friend of mine (I’ll call him Joe) introduced me to affiliate marketing as a way to earn extra cash. Joe said that if I could build a list of targeted consumers and email them offers, I would make money. It sounded a lot like a scheme to me, but I figured, why not? I could give it a shot, what did I have to lose?

Joe gave me specific instructions on what products to resell, and how to automatically build the list. Of course, those were the early days of the internet, when the World Wide Web was rife with Usenet newsgroups and LISTSERV technology—an automatic mailing list server developed by Eric Thomas for BITNET in 1986.

Back then, you could open a ListBot account, join a few groups, and with a few clicks you could invite tens of thousands of people who might be interested in what you’re promoting. In a few days, you would have an enormous list of prospective clients on your list.

I followed Joe’s instructions to the last detail. I started mailing offers to my ListBot subscribers like crazy. Then I waited…

It sure didn’t take long—I made a cool $2300.00 in commissions in just a few short days!

Imagine my surprise! With that kind of success, I projected that if I made $2300 within a few days, I could continue to do the same for the rest of my life, make a lot of money, and never have to work again!

Boy, did I learn fast.

Little did I know that I had just gotten lucky. I had no plans or strategies to improve on the concept of list building, or internet promotions in general. I simply did what Joe told me to, and it resulted in a large payout…I got lucky.

My point is simply this:

In business, it’s important to know when you’re just getting lucky.

Why is this so important? Well as you know, you can’t rely on pure luck to make a consistent living. I assumed that if I had continued blasting my ListBot subscribers, I would make around the same profit every time. If I had foolishly quit my job to rely on the fat commissions I predicted I could make, I would have been in serious trouble! This is why knowing when you get lucky is truly significant to your success.

How Does Luck Affect My Business?

Obviously, everyone differs in their beliefs. Whether or not you believe in luck is irrelevant—I’m sure that everyone can still agree that you shouldn’t count your chickens before they have hatched.

However, even if you don’t believe that earning $2300.00 in less than a week was luck, you must admit that it was out of the ordinary. Count it as a bonus! In business, we must learn to accept that some outcomes are out of our control.

Does this mean that you should wait on luck for great results? Absolutely not! To quote the great business strategist Peter Drucker: “Luck never built a business.” Continue to work hard, and who knows—you could have a windfall of luck with unexpected profit, or an overnight surge of subscribers on your list!

Knowing the difference between ‘luck’ and ‘strategized success’ is the key. You can repeat your strategized plan over and over again and achieve similar results, but luck happens only once in a blue moon.

So, don’t be fooled!

Thank you so very much for your response, Abe. Right now, I am surfing the internet for a home-based business. There are a lot of them out there. For sure. I am just undecided, right now. With due respect, Priscilla Wilder
