Abe Cherian started Multiple Stream Media in 1998 when he was 27 years old, living in his one bedroom apartment in New York City.
After working for an offline advertising company, selling creative advertising spaces to small local businesses for over 2 years, it was his conviction that the Internet media will take over the future of marketing and advertising in a big way. Working with several offline sales offices, Abe also was convinced that the company, the people, and the systems can be optimized to everybody’s advantage and not just the top tier management.
“When I started my business, I swore to myself that I wouldn’t treat my clients and my team the way they have been treated by most companies. And I would learn to better myself first before I request anyone in my team to make that change. I knew that a major shift like this would require a brand new paradigm shift.
I was Born in a small village in South India. Since I could remember, my father has always been in business in the textile industry.
I watched him through the eyes of a small boy, at the top of his game, opening up several businesses internationally. I watched him through the eyes of a teenager and losing everything he had worked for. I have seen his greatest marketing strategies and I have seen his mega marketing blunders. But, never have I heard him talking about quitting and going to work for someone. He wanted the best for his family. He wanted to send his children to college, and take pleasure from a successful marriage to a loving wife. He dreamt the dream that has moved good men from the beginning of time.
Starting a business has always been my goal. But it’s easy to get sucked into a system and culture where ‘working to pay the bills’ is the norm, you get sidetracked and often give up on your dreams. I graduated from college, got into the workforce and I fell into that same trap. One good thing that came out of being in the workforce was that I met my wife there. It wasn’t long before both my wife and I was struggling to pay the bills, together. To my surprise and horror, by not being able to meet the rent, one day we found ourselves living in our car for a couple of days. I promised my wife that this would never happen again. Since that experience, I have never looked back again.
Like most Internet Entrepreneurs, I really did start Multiple Stream Media (a big dream then), in the corner of my one bedroom apartment. Two years after I started my business, I had already added two people to my team. I was still conducting business in the very same one bedroom apartment. It wasn’t until I had to hire more help that I decided to rent office space.
The Multiple Stream Media Name.
When I think of success, prosperity, well being, and abundance I think of water — flowing, life-giving water. I am not sure if this relation to water and prosperity comes from my eastern upbringing, or astrology (Astrologically, I am considered to be a ‘Water Sign’
. I’ve had several dreams where streams of water would flow in from different directions and end up in a large body of water — and it always made me feel good. So, the name ‘Multiple Stream Media’ came quite naturally when I was looking for a company name in 1998.
